THE NEWS IN BRIEF BOOK A TEE TIME OVERSEEDING PROCESS HELPS MONARCH BEACH STAY IN TOP SHAPE IMPROVEMENTS MAKE 7 HOLES ON THE COURSE BETTER M onarch Beach began its annual overseeding process last month, which will ensure top-notch playing conditions all year long. Because of the newly seeded grass and heavy watering it requires, the course will be played cart-path only until the winter season rye grass has had time to grow in. The maintenance crew is also making significant strides to improve drainage, along with resodding areas that have struggled to maintain a consistent yearround playing surface. Monarch Beach is one of the few Southern California golf courses that continue to overseed on a yearly basis. The process sets Monarch Beach apart by providing a more healthy, greener, and playable golf course throughout the year. T Work on the 18th hole has led to better turf conditions. he 16th and 18th holes at Monarch Beach – as well as a handful of others – have been receiving extra care the past few weeks by the grounds crew in order to make them healthier heading into winter. Included in the process was the removal and excavation of all the turf, soil and drainage at least six inches into the ground. Additional drainage was added to the holes that connect to the current drainage system. All told, the improvements will reduce more than 80 percent of the salinity in the soil, allow water to drain properly, and the turf to flourish year-round even with heavy golf car traffic.
