A fter hosting four charity golf tournaments, Joelle Flynn thought she knew how to run a successful event. But she needed a refresher — and a friend. Flynn had just re- located to Dana Point and was named Executive Director of the newly formed Orange County chapter of Girls on the Run, an international character-enrich- ment non-profit for girls 8 to 13 that integrates running. First stop: Flynn's home course, Monarch Beach Golf Links. Staff was friendly, she thought. Course was beautiful. Perfect place for a charity event. So she signed up for Monarch Beach's Charity All-Stars Semi- nar for that refresher. And what she got was so much more. "When I left the seminar, I felt so empowered to raise more money in more unique ways than I had thought of," says Flynn, who attended the seminar last October. "I feel more capable of holding a golf tournament, es- pecially with Junior (Sperazza, Monarch Beach's Director Sales and Marketing) and his staff be- hind us along the way." Flynn says Sperazza "thinks outside the box" and offers valu- able advice and suggestions dur- ing the seminar, such as starting a silent auction online prior to the event, or a helicopter ball drop to increase proceeds. A tournament-planning workbook is included in the seminar, too. It's been three years getting the Girls on the Run Orange County chapter established. Flynn is working, voluntarily, to set up the inaugural fund-raiser in the next year. And with the help of her new friends at Monarch Beach, she knows the tournament will be a success.
