I
an Pullan has worked at top resorts
all over the world, but there's no
place he'd rather be than Monarch
Beach Resort. The resort's Vice
President and General Manager since
2014, Pullan knows he's fortunate to
work in a location with an abundance of
natural beauty and at a resort where em-
ployees strive to offer the best possible
service each and every day. He has
learned a lot in his nearly 30 years in the
hospitality business, and has never lost
his passion for providing guests with
memorable experiences. He took time
out of his schedule to give the Beach-
comber an inside look at his job and
what he loves about Monarch Beach.
Why did you choose to come to
Monarch Beach and what do you find
special about it? Monarch Beach Resort
has a tremendous reputation, a best-in-
class team and attracts very high-profile
groups, events and leisure guests. The
renovation and repositioning was a very
exciting opportunity — the resort has
turned out beautifully and we are all
very proud of the finished product. I
also jumped at the chance to come back
to live in Southern California. My wife
grew up in the Los Angeles area, where
we met 20 years ago and it's a wonder-
ful place for my three children to go to
school and settle down.

What are some of your favorite
things about the resort? What makes
Monarch Beach Resort a very special
place is the sheer variety of what we
have to offer. You can start your day
with a meditation class or a walk along
the beach, spend time at the pool with
family or engage in everything from ten-
nis to the spa, golf, hiking and cycling –
all on property! In addition, eight
unique restaurant options means you
never have to leave. I love the beach in
the morning for a run, along the high
tide line and a coffee afterward in Part &
Parcel – MBR is just a perfect place for
families or couples to reconnect and
have fun together.

How much do you think the resort's
location along the Pacific Ocean adds
to its appeal? Our Pacific Ocean loca-
tion is a huge part of who we are. There
is a very special surf culture here in
Dana Point, year-round whale watching
and of course the weather is consistently
perfect. We have 190 acres that connect
with the Pacific Ocean and so many
unique spots for views of Catalina, the
California coastline and gorgeous sun-
sets. It's a perfect place to rejuvenate and
enjoy a coastal retreat.

What outdoor activities do you
enjoy? I like boogie boarding and
kayaking with my 8-year-old son. I am
an avid runner and cyclist. We are con-
nected to 80 miles of trails, which I enjoy
on a regular basis. We have a great five-
mile run from the resort that includes
two miles of beach and is incredible es-
pecially at sunrise or sunset.
