A GOOD WALK UNSPOILED > C L I C K H E R E T O D O W N LO A D T H E M O N A R C H B E A C H G O L F L I N K S T E E T I M E A P P On THE COuRSE THE BEnEFITS OF wAlKIng N ot every course can advo- cate walking as much as Monarch Beach Golf Links, which is 6,601 yards from the tips and located on mostly flat terrain with manageable distances from greens to tees. One of the great benefits of walk- ing? It can improve your score. "It's a different experience men- tally when walking," said Director of Sales and Marketing Junior Sper- azza. "You have more time to focus and prepare for the next shot. You get to know the lay of the land better and you can begin visu- alizing your shot before you're even there." Here are a few more, courtesy of thewalkinggolfer.com: 9 You will burn almost twice as many calories as you would riding. 9 You have a much better opportu- nity to interact with all of your play- ing partners. 9 You can fully enjoy the natural beauty of the golf course from tee to green. D octors know it, fitness gurus preach it and anyone who's health-conscious realizes it: walking is good for both the soul and the body. And Monarch Beach's new walking initiative serves as a reminder to golfers about how bene- ficial — and enjoyable — walking a golf course can be. Since January, the course has re- warded golfers who choose to walk its 18 beachfront holes with a com- plimentary push cart and a free sleeve of Nike RZN golf balls. The more golfers who walk, the theory goes, the more exercise they'll get, the more they'll appreciate the nat- ural beauty of the course and sur- rounding area, the less stress on turf from carts and, interestingly, the faster they will play. "Many golfers, like my- self, think that golf is a game that should be walked and realize that walkers often play in less time than rid- ers," said Junior Sperazza, Monarch Beach's Director of Sales and Mar- keting. "If you're in a cart, you tend to drive and look for lost balls and, depending on cart path rules, there are many places you can't access so you have to park, grab your clubs and walk to the ball, so you're actu- ally doing more (unnecessary) walk- ing than if you just walked directly to your ball."
