THE LESSON TEE
Monarch BeachComber • Winter 2017
W
hether you're a beginning
golfer just learning the ba-
sics, a low-handicapper look-
ing for ways to address a few problem
areas in your game or a high-handicap-
per seeking more consistency and better
scores, the golf professional staff at
Monarch Beach Golf Links can help.
Under the direction of PGA General
Manager and Director of Game Im-
provement Eric Lohman, PGA Director
of Golf Brandon Delgado, PGA Head
Golf Professional Eric Julian, Assistant
Golf Professionals Jackie Riegle and
Blake Froling, PGA, and Guest PGA
Instructor Sean Lanyi, there are many
opportunities for improving your skills
at Monarch Beach.
"The most unique thing about our in-
struction offerings is that we don't offer
cookie-cutter programming," Lohman
said. "We spend more time giving play-
ing lessons or using our golf course as
our practice facility. This allows us to
customize our lessons and offer more
in-depth instruction."
Lohman's commitment to teaching
was recognized in November when he
was named the 2017 Southern Califor-
nia PGA Golf Professional of the Year.
He also received the Bill Strausbaugh
Award, recognizing career development
work for PGA Professionals.
"It is an honor and privilege,"
Lohman said acknowledgments. "To be
recognized by my peers for my service
to our section, its members and appren-
tices is very rewarding and humbling."
Private lessons are available, and
Monarch Beach offers a number of dif-
ferent group clinics as well.
The AimPoint Express green-read-
ing clinics offered by Lanyi are particu-
larly popular as the sessions tackle
strategies for improvement in one of
the areas of the game that's the hardest
for amateurs to master yet has such a
dramatic impact on scoring. Lanyi fo-
cuses on three elements that will help
you make more putts – green reading,
aim and speed.
The Tiny Tees program has also taken
off in popularity. Different instruction is
offered for players 3-7 years old and 8-
13 (with beginner and intermediate lev-
els within each group), and Tiny Tees
instructors are trained specifically to
teach golf to children. The program in-
cludes four weekly sessions that last 45
minutes and focus on enhancing kids'
golf skills and overall coordination
while placing a heavy emphasis on hav-
ing fun and fostering a love of the game.
